Ladies Who Lunch Gold Award – Awarded December 2010
I am very lucky to have this little gem of an Indian Restaurant very near to where I live. It has been much feted on Trip Advisor so thought it about time I added my view! On this visit to Kali Mirchi there were 7 of us, a Christmas get together. Two of our friends are real fans of Indian food and I’m delighted to say even they were impressed.
It has recently been re decorated so the interior is looking very contemporary. The service is attentive and the staff are helpful with explanations; they are very knowledgeable about their food. Chefs Mikesh, Sanjay and Mandan believe in producing traditional dishes from different regions of India using fresh and locally sourced ingredients.
I am not an expert in Indian food but even I could recognise that there are some interesting and unusual dishes on the menu. I won’t list everything we ate but the highlights: a starter, Shrimp Kathi Roll – street food originating from Kolkata, India- stuffed in paratha & shallow fried. Mains- Kache Gosht Ki Biryani – traditional Hyderabad style succulent lamb on the bone marinated with yogurt & spices, cooked together with rice & served with veggie curry, Tenga Machi – An Assamese fish curry, haddock cooked in a sweet & sour sauce & served with steamed rice and Malaidar – Spinach curry with green chillies, fresh garlic finished with cream! My mouth is watering remembering all the delicious flavours!
Kali Mirchi offers amazing value as we started with the usual poppadums, plus starters, mains, several beers and bottles of wine and the cost was only around £20 per head!
I highly recommend. And, if you live near enough, you can order everything as takeaway.
(Revisited for the lunchtime buffet, October 2011. The buffet choice tasted lovely - and the review marking is unchanged for the A la Carte menu.)
